Even if the Clean Economy Coalition is only half-right, this is still plenty of cause for concern. Air quality at several of our schools has already been rated by the EPA, as some of worst in the United States. Just a few months ago my nine-year-old was diagnosed with asthma.
Wake Up and Represent the 361 William Henneberger
Press Release 3-4-09
Comedian, Steve Trevino, a South Texas native has a one-liner about our city… “Corpus Christi is the only town where you can fart in the car and blame it on outside.”
I know Steve Trevino loves his hometown, and he’s done more than his share to try to jump-start the local comedy scene. Still, anyone who has spent some time in our city knows that there is a little bit of truth to that punch line.
As a candidate for Corpus Christi’s City Council District 2, my initial opinion on the proposed Las Brisas Energy Plant was that it was a necessary evil, given the current state of the economy and Corpus Christi’s (un)development. I had heard a couple of arguments for each side, none of which stirred me very far in either direction.
That changed when I received a call from a concerned voter, who was calling all of the City Council candidates, to find out their stance on the Las Brisas issue. This was the first time I heard that the plant would increase local pollution by 70%.
For you simple folks, that means that if all the factories already in operation put out 100 pollution thingys, then Las Brisas will put out 70 pollution thingys all by itself, for a total of 170 pollution thingys. That’s a lot of frickin pollution thingys. This is all adequately explained at www.cleanenergycorpus.com.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 4, 2009
City Council Candidate makes himself accessible to all.
Corpus Christi (TX) – After weeks of meetings, regarding the strategy of his campaign, William Henneberger has decided NOT to traditionally promote his candidacy. He will not be attending any political forums, or placing signs throughout the city, nor will he be asking for any financial contributions.
Instead, William Henneberger would like any district 2 voter interested in his candidacy, to feel free to personally call him and speak one on one.
William Henneberger is self-employed as a local writer, and has a very flexible schedule. He has ample time to thoroughly devote himself to the needs and concerns of the people in his district, which covers the heart of Corpus Christi, as well as the down town area.
William Henneberger believes, “If candidates are going to promise change it needs to start with the way we campaign.”
All media outlets should feel free to publish or air the following:

Wake Up and Dream William Henneberger
I hate to sleep Corpus Christi. Most mornings usually between 4 and 6am I crash on my sofa out of pure exhaustion, only to be woken by my 2 year-old at about 10:30. If I get to bed earlier, I debate for at least an hour, whether I should get up and do a few loads of laundry while I work on a flyer for some event you probably won’t show up at.
About a week ago, we got a new set of sofas, the kind that don’t bruise your kidneys when you sleep on them. It wasn’t until last night, however, that I realized that while napping on the new couch, I have the most amazing dreams.
Dreams of revolution. Dreams of a cultural uprising, and you, and you, and you, and you were there.
My dream is to be a writer. A television writer specifically, but if I can buy a house some day form money earned putting this little rag together, who am I to complain.
There is still plenty of room in our town for dreams Corpus Christi.
I know some people who dream of, one day soon, enjoying a concert downtown at the Ritz Theater. I know more than a few dreamers who are hard at work growing the local film and music scenes. Others mixing art, business and salmon into one tasty sushi roll.
And I know a group of outsiders with great ideas, along with a few dollars from some forward-thinking advertisers, who put together a pretty good publication in a town that fights them almost every step of the way.
What’s your dream Corpus Christi?
Long-term, Las Brisas only offers Corpus Christi about 100 decent paying jobs, none of which are guaranteed to go to local employees.
Now is the time to stand up for Corpus Christi. Protesting Las Brisas can be the first major step in a new dedication toward a better quality of life in our city. This kind of pride in our community will be the foundation that is necessary for proper development. Development with more return and less burn.
Wake Up and Vote William Henneberger
It’s fair to say that I have been quite ignorant when it comes to local politics. This is either because of general laziness and/or an overwhelming fear of parliamentary procedure (a.k.a. motion sickness).
All this is about to change, and if you stay with me for a moment, you might be surprised to see how easy it would be to take control of our city.
It all comes down to the fact, that over the past few local government elections, only about 20,000 people turn out to vote. Some of the members of our City Council were elected with no more than 1,200 votes.
The following are the election results for the 2007 local
Mayor Henry Garret: ran unopposed and got 14,739 votes. In this election 19,422 people voted, this means that there were about 5,000 people who didn’t even cast a ballot for mayor.
City Council
Melody Cooper At Large: won with 8,752 votes
Mike Hummell At Large: won with 9,083 votes
Nelda Martinez At Large: won with 10,658 votes
Bill Kelly District 1: ran unopposed and won with 1,199 votes
John Marez District 2: won with 1,737 votes
Priscilla Leal District 3: won with 1,033 in a run off election
Michael McCutchon District 4: won with 3,251 in a run off election
Larry Elizondo, Sr. District 5: won with 2,191 in a run off election
This is basic information, available to anyone through the city secretary page of cctexas.com.
Now, let me get to the point…
We have decided to play a more active role in the future of our city by helping to organize voters in Corpus Christi.
In certain districts 300 or 400 of us can shift the vote whichever way we see fit, and with 2,000 votes in a district we can run the candidate of our choice. IT IS THAT EASY.
Up to this point, The Vent’s purpose has been primarily entertainment based. We will still be here to entertain you with:
The Vent Magazine (CC’s most circulated alternative publication)
The Vent TV (Thurs. 11pm on KTMV, ch 6 Time Warner)
The Beards (the only comedy show in town see page 7)
…but starting now The Vent is taking a stand against ignorance and apathy in out City.
THE ONLY WAY OUR CITY WILL GET TO WHERE WE WANT IT, IS IF WE ALL CARRY IT THERE.
If you would like to be a part of The Vent Movement, contact The Vent at 361-549-6213 or ventnation@yahoo.com or myspace.com/theventnation.
Wake up,
